Berlin (agrar-PR) -
www.ista-cologne2010.de From today, you can register for the 29th
Congress of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) online at
www.ista-cologne2010.de. The ISTA Congress is to be held at the
Gürzenich banqueting hall in Cologne from 16 to 22 June 2010. The
homepage also contains information on the congress schedule. The
congress will be held in English.
For the first time in quite a while, Germany will again be hosting
an ISTA congress; the congress will be organised by the Federal
Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) and the
Agriculture Ministry of the Land of North Rhine-Westphalia.
In the face of the continuing rise in the global
population, ensuring both food security and energy supply will be one
of the key challenges facing mankind in the future. In order to meet
this challenge, the agricultural sector requires high-quality and
healthy seeds and seedlings of efficient plant varieties throughout the
world. Rigorous quality assurance along the entire seed production
chain is necessary to achieve this goal.
Reliable seed tests will become even more
important in the future, given that the global movement of goods,
including seed, will continue to increase. The international standards
developed by ISTA underpin smooth trade in seed throughout the world.
The agricultural ministry is delighted at the
opportunity the congress provides to engage in discussions with
government representatives and international experts from the seed
industry. The
BMELV Policy Forum on “
Harmonised seed testing and global seed trade" will deal on 21 June 2010 with the importance of standardising seed testing in the 21st century for global seed trade.
